Player pioneer puts telephony into 'internet media tablet'
Media player specialist Archos has announced a thin tablet based on Google's Android mobile telephony platform giving it functionality similar to Apple's iPhone.
But the 10mm-thick Internet Media Tablet, as the company styles the device, will have a larger screen at 5in and up to 500GB of storage.
It is powered by the ARM-based OMAP 3 system-on-a-chip from Texas
Instruments.
An Archos statement said: "With the integration of voice, [we are] looking to
expand beyond portable media players to provide solutions for the converged
space, where a foundation in high-quality video content delivery is a benefit."
:
It claims the device, launching in the second half of this year, will provide a "PC-like Internet experience" with "full-width page viewing… and uncompromised TV recording and high definition (HD) playback."
Archos is evidently moving away from narrow function media players. It also recently announced the Archos 10 netbook, a media player with full PC functionality.
