Uploading of any type of file visible to all on website
A new website called Izimi has launched that allows you to upload any kind of file for sharing with the world.
Files are hosted on your PC and made visible on Izimi's website. Uploads are peer to peer and the host needs a free piece of software, which is currently limited to Windows operating systems, to share files.
Described as a social networking site, the website looks a bit like YouTube with users' hosted files appearing as links or thumbnails on the website.
Izimi admits there are security concerns since a user's PC is transformed into a server. It recommends a firewall and antivirus software since uploaded files aren't virus scanned by the website.
Additionally files can't currently be made private, although there are plans to do so.
Izimi claims there will be no restrictions on file type, size or quality and says registered users get their own profile plus community features including comments, rating, adding friends, adding favourites and messaging.
An Izimi spokesperson told PCW there are no restrictions on content, except for illegal content including copyright infringement, and he would neither confirm nor deny that users will be able to upload pornography.

Just to clarify 2 points: re security, here's what we say in our FAQ about it: "Is izimi safe? izimi respects your local firewall and router settings and uses normal operating system and browser capabilities ? it just does things in a bit of a clever way. If you are a publisher and you use izimi to create a user profile and publish some media, izimi only allows people?s browsers to request your specifically published content ? nothing else. If you?re looking at another izimi user?s published media, you decide what you request and what you see. Generally images, music, and videos may be regarded as safer than .exes, but you?ll need to make a judgment call. As with email, IM and general web browsing, take steps to establish trust in any source and use an up-to-date antivirus product like Norton or McAfee." And re Restricted content, when you publish files, you are asked to mark them as adult/restricted content if you consider them so. Izimi's sophisticated user-operated black flagging system would ensure that any file that should have been marked Restricted when published would not last long! John Wood, http://www.izimi.com
