Western Digital launches 2TB drive

500GB per platter – and careful with the power consumption too

Western Digital has launched what it says is the world's first 2TB drive, the latest addition to its Caviar Green range.

The 3.5in drive packs 500GB per platter, with an aerial density of 50GB per square inch. It will be available at selected dealers this month for €299 (about £270).

The low-drain Caviar Green products are designed for use in USB, Firewire, eSata external computers or internal drives. They use a technology called Intellipower to refine power consumption, spin speed and performance.

Units storing 2TB or more have been available for some time from a variety of vendors, but typically they pack more than one drive.
