Heavy users will be encouraged to upgrade their account, says T-Mobile
T-Mobile will place a 3GB cap on monthly data downloads on the G1 phone when it launches here at the start of November.
The company said at the New York launch that US users would face a 1GB cap, after which downloads would be limited to a speed of 50Kbits/sec – about that of an old steam dial-up modem.
It later removed what it called the '1GB soft limit' from its fair-use policy but did not say what would replace it.
It said in a statement: "The specific terms of our new data plans are still being reviewed."
A T-Mobile spokesman in London said he understood that there would be a 3GB fair-use limit here. "If you exceed that you won't be charged initially but if you continue the heavy usage you may get a charge from a T-Mobile representative suggesting that you upgrade your account."
The 1GB cap came in for a lot of criticism after the launch of the G1, which uses the new Android platform. Many people pointed out that it would make the G1 less competitive with Apple's iPhone.
