Temporarily insert a row in an Excel spreadsheet to sort a column alphabetically
Q I know how to sort the data in a single column, but how do I sort a table so the column headings are arranged alphabetically?
The headings are hotel names. If the name starts with ‘The’, that word should
be ignored. I’m using Excel 2007.

A The easiest way to do this is to temporarily insert a row above the headings and enter numbers to indicate the preferred order; 1 for the column of labels on the left, 2 for the first hotel, 3 for the second and so on.
Highlight the whole table and choose Home, Editing, Sort, Custom Sort.
In the Sort dialogue box the boxes should read Sort by Row 1, Sort On Values and Order Smallest to Largest.
Click the Options button and choose, ‘Sort left to right’. Now OK out.
Delete the temporary row and the job’s done. Readers using earlier versions of Excel can choose Sort on the Data menu and click the Options button to find the same Sort left to right facility.
