Edit the Registry to disable annoying pop-up messages
Q I have turned off User Account Control (UAC) in Vista it has now been two months and the sky hasn’t fallen on my head.
But there’s a secondary annoyance in that a message pops up from the Notification Area, at irregular intervals, informing me that UAC is turned off.
Is it possible to prevent this message from appearing?
Scott Milner
A You can disable this and all other pop-up messages by editing the Registry.
Having made a restore point, run Regedit, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \Software \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Explorer \Advanced.
Right-click in the right-hand pane and create a new DWORD. Call this EnableBalloonTips (all one word) and leave its value set to zero.
Close Regedit, log off and back on, and the pop-ups will be gone.
Should you miss the pop-ups, you can turn them back on by either deleting EnableBalloonTips or setting its value to 2.
