M-audio Sonica

Previously know as Midiman, M-audio is a big name in professional and semi-professional audio hardware, but the Sonica is targeted at consumers who want the best audio playback quality from their laptop or even desktop machines.

There isn't a huge amount to Sonica. Essentially it's a USB soundcard that can output 24bit audio at rates of up to 96KHz, which is pretty much the highest anyone could want to use.

Be warned though, this device does not support recording, it's only designed for outputting audio. Also, it doesn't support Windows 98, only Windows ME, 2000 and XP. We tried it on Windows 98 and it definitely doesn't work, so don't buy it thinking it might.

To get the unit up and running you simply plug it into an available USB port and load up the drivers. It then provides you with an analogue line out via a 3.5mm minijack and a digital output via an optical connector. That's your lot in terms of connections.

The only other feature of the card is support for SRS Trusurround XT, which is a virtual surround-sound algorithm that tries to produce 3D audio from a simple stereo output. It never really sounds 3D but it does broaden the stereo image of songs and movies.

Trusound also features Trubass, which is a bass enhancement algorithm. These effects are controlled from a small applet that sits in your system tray.

But this card isn't about flashy features. It's simply about quality audio, and here it really delivers.

M-audio's professional experience shines through when it comes to sound quality. The audio is amazingly crisp and there's a warmth and depth here that you simply don't get on cards with lesser bit rates.
