Plextor PX-712A

Introducing the fastest DVD writer.

Dual-layer might be generating the current buzz for DVD recorders, but it's not quite there yet. The drives on the market don't necessarily offer the level of compatibility with standalone DVD players at the moment.

For this reason Plextor has chosen not to enter the dual-layer market just yet, focussing instead on ramping up DVD writer speeds. For this review we've managed to get our hands on its new 12-speed writer.

This speed actually refers to the write speed of DVD+R, as it's only capable of writing DVD-R at eight-speed. Even so, it is quite impressive and, best of all, it doesn't need 12-speed media to work, as it can write eight-speed media at top whack. It works in a similar way for DVD-R, as four-speed media can be written at eight-speed.

In our tests we managed to write a 4.16GB PCW cover disc at 12-speed in eight minutes, seven seconds. That's fast, and considerably above the pace set by the current range of eight-speed drives.

The quality of the drive is also impressive, sporting technology such as Varirec and Gigarec. The former lets you adjust the average laser power during recording, which can improve compatibility, while the latter lets you squeeze 900MB on an 80 minute CD.

We reviewed the Parallel ATA version, although a Sata version is available. Both have the same performance, although Sata has better cable management.

As with all Plextor products, everything you need to install it comes with it, including Plextools Tools Professional for recording discs. It's all backed up by a two year warranty.

Until the dual-layer issues settle down, the PX-712A is the fastest, but not cheapest, drive you can buy.
