Listen to music all around your home.
Streaming digital music files from your PC to your TV or stereo is gaining popularity now that wireless networks are readily available and reasonably cheap. Netgear's MP101 is not only well designed but also has built-in 802.11g. There's an Ethernet port for wired networks too.
The inclusion of an LCD means you don't need a television screen to browse through your files (unlike other systems) and having a remote control allows you do everything from the sofa.
Unfortunately, while the specifications talk a good game, the implementation leaves a lot to be desired. Reading the manual leads you to believe that setting up the MP101 is as simple as installing the software, connecting the device to a stereo and activating the wireless network search option.
While the first two steps went without a hitch, it had real problems automatically detecting our wireless network. We got it working eventually but this meant delving into the advanced menus to configure the ESSID and suchlike. In essence, that's fine for network fans, but frustrating for novices.
Once up and running, it delivers the goods. It supports mp3 and wma audio formats, and is quick at accessing files when a connection is established.
Artists, albums, genres and playlists can all be browsed using the remote control, as long as your preferred songs are within the Netgear Media Server, which is installed on your PC. The Netgear software can scan for all compatible music files on your PC and the device itself can read from multiple computers, providing they are on the same network.
Despite some setup niggles, the MP101 is one of the better products and a good way to stream music round your house.
