Review: Linksys WAG160N Draft N router

A stylish exterior, but the interface needs a refresh

Previous Linksys routers weren’t the most aesthetically pleasing, but this new model is something you’ll want to have out on display.

Designed to sit horizontally, two aerials are built into the casing.

This makes it look neater but it does mean you can’t replace them with bigger aerials, nor can you point them in a specific direction to improve coverage.

A collection of icons light up to indicate wireless, DSL and internet activity as well as attached Ethernet devices.

Instead of a Gigabit switch, Linksys has opted for a 10/100Mbits/sec version.

While this won’t slow down your wireless activity, it means it won’t be able to take advantage of the speed offered by Gigabit Lan devices wired directly to it.

Using the supplied software, installation is painless, we had it up and running in a matter of minutes.

The router’s interface could be better laid out; seven menu tabs sit at the top, with each one leading to a further selection of menus.

It creates a rather cluttered feel, and anyone without home networking experience will struggle to get to grips with it. There is, however, a fairly extensive help section for each topic.

An Access Restrictions section lets you dictate when the internet should be available – particularly useful if you’ve got children. You can also tailor internet access restrictions for each PC on your network.

Wireless performance was on a par with other Draft N routers we’ve tested, averaging around 30Mbits/sec. But, as usual, the performance levels you experience will depend on local wireless congestion, the thickness of walls in your home and other factors.

Linksys has done a great job with the design of this router – it’s just a shame the same amount of effort hasn’t been put into the interface.

WAG160N doesn't work

Buyer beware. This equipment does not work properly. I bought the WAG160N so I could connect a new laptop by wireless. Needing a VoIP phone adapter to work with the modem I called Linksys to ask what I should do. They recommended a Linksys PAP2T adapter which I also bought. 1. The wireless internet connection fails frequently and constantly needs rebooting. I might just as well sit at the wired desktop. 2. The VoIP adapter normally does not work. Linksys tell me there is a known problem between the PAP2T and the WAG160N. It's sad that they didn't tell me this when I asked what to buy. 3. The WAG160N falls over every time I launch my P2P torrent program. Within two minutes the internet fails followed by the DSL line. It has never worked properly. Apparently this is also a known issue with this equipment. I have spent many hours with Linksys help trying to fix these issues, including firmware upgrades and much stuffing around. I have reached the point where I simply want my money back so I can buy other equipment that works.

WAG160N Pain

At first pleased with easy setup. But soon experienced problems with broadband connection speed dropping. Disconneting ADSL cable restored speed, but is a constant problem. Also has extream difficulty establishing wireless connection if powered off. Now wish I had not brought this kit

Brilliant router does everything you want and more

I have had this router for about a year and have never needed to restart it. Until today when the wireless started timing out. Pulled the power out the back plugged back in and away it goes. iMac (wireless N) picked up the wireless connection straight away. I also use with PS3 (wireless and wired), xbox360, windows laptop (wireless g) and my iphone. The only problem is a year without a reboot is the wireless timeout today and my ISP being useless. I use my connection mainly for bbc iplayer, ftp, http, https occasional ptp, ssh and it stands strong through all. Running on Firmware Version:V1.00.06 which I'm about to upgrade

Don't buy it

Easy set up and great coverage but quickly starts to drop the connection, coming up with a "limited connection" message that can't be resolved without turning it on and off. May as well not be wireless!

Agree with Dave

Can't hold a wireless connection fot more than five minutes, woeful performance.

I agree

It was easy to setup, but it does seem to regulary like every 15 minutes or so, just drop the connection and yes I need to "repair" the connection to get connectivity again. Also the wireless speed seems quite variable. I'm goint to take it back and get my money back.

Avoid like the plague.

With poor quality firmware (the latest version .12 causes your ADSL to drop every 5-10 minutes), frequent random stoppages of wireless and wired conenctions, a frequent disconnect betweent the wireless and wired parts of the router and terrible customer support, this router should be avoided at all possible. You speak to customer support and they want you to send the router back to a foreign country at your expense. You complain on their forums and they ban your account for a year. Don't be fooled by the Cisco brand, this product falls FAR short of Cisco's usual standard, which is probably why they have recently come out with a new version of the hardware (v2.0). I highly doubt anyone stuck with a v1.0 model will have any hope of a replacement though. Check the LinksysByCisco.com/uk forums for all the other people complaining that the WAG160N is poor at best.

Starting to get there....

I had this router as a backup from an old customer. My sky router recently died so I attempted to use this router as a replacement, however I started to get the same problems as other people (loss of wireless connections and ADSL drops)so I decided to try and update the firmware to V1.00.16, and the problems went away. I am left with one small problem. If I want to use my wireless printer (Kodak ESP 5250) with one of the laptops, I have to reset the router before trying to print. But otherwise a lot better than when I first used it.
