Simple clear advice in plain English

Canon Bubble Jet i865

Big is beautiful, and so is its print quality.

If you were a fan of the Canon Bubble Jet i850, you'll be impressed with its successor - the Bubble Jet i865. This business-targeted printer is much like its predecessor but now comes with a second black ink cartridge - more on that later.

Canon claims the Bubble Jet i865 is the fastest inkjet printer on the market, with page per minute speeds of 23 for black and 16 for colour.

Typically, our real-life lab tests found these figures to be way off - seven pages for black text and one for colour. However, our results include spool time and our colour test document also contains an image. Canon's estimates will be at just five per cent paper coverage.

The Bubble Jet i865 has a maximum print resolution of 4,800 x 1,200dpi and the results are fantastic. Printed on matt paper, our full-page colour test image was crisp, with sharp and vivid colours. The blacks were also very solid. Canon is likely to claim this is the work of the extra black ink cartridge; however, we're not sure why as the new cartridge simply holds more ink. The three other tanks contain cyan, magenta and yellow ink.

Another selling point is the i865's ability to print quietly. Even in draft mode, it produced pages almost silently. Digital image fans will appreciate the Pictbridge port, which allows Pictbridge-compatible cameras and camcorders to print directly via USB without needing a PC.

Other features include A4 borderless printing, a dedicated paper tray to hold and feed 4 x 6in photo paper and a detachable CD-R label printing unit. Both USB and parallel ports can be used, and bundled software includes Canon's Easy-Photo Print Plus, Photorecord for auto-scaling images for specific media types, CD-Labelprint and Zoombrowser for managing digital images.
