HP Officejet 4110

Not the quickest, but it's cheap and versatile.

Leaving no stone unturned in its quest to dominate the multifunction device market, HP is now treading on Lexmark's toes with an ultra-low-cost product for the home user. The Officejet 4110 combines print, scan and copy functions, as well as fully built-in fax operation.

The case is designed to take up as little space as possible, with its input and output trays folding inwards flush with the unit when not in use. The input feeder at the front holds just 100 sheets and printouts are dropped on top of it. In addition, there is a sheet feeder tray on the top of the case for fax and scan functions, delivering originals onto a dedicated wire catch tray at the front. Obviously, since the scanner is sheet-fed, you can only scan and fax loose documents, which turns out to be a limitation more often than you might expect.

Printouts and copies are produced by quality inkjet printheads which achieve high-quality text worthy of an office printer, and impressive colour photo output on both plain and glossy papers, which will go down well at home. Speed performance is another matter, though. Our tests suggested a real-world speed of 3ppm (pages per minute) for plain black text documents, which doesn't compare well with the official 7.8ppm rating; note that HP's 10ppm rating in its brochure only relates to draft mode.

Fax and copy control buttons are arranged on a front panel along with a two-line LCD status display, and everything has been designed to be very easy to use. The unit can also store up to 65 pages of incoming faxes pending printing. If you can live with an all-in-one that takes its time, the Officejet 4110 is a budget bargain.
