Cable broadband with no upper usage limit
My £25-a-month Telewest cable service has been upgraded steadily from 512Kbits/sec to the current 4Mbits/sec and I've had few problems with it. Telewest has yet to impose any bandwidth cap.
I chose cable because it appeared to have more potential than ADSL, but the latter has been making all the running recently with the opening of exchanges to BT rivals.
But as Telewest is in the throes of a merger with NTL, which is itself merging with Virgin, I expect this to change.
Telewest is in the process of rolling out new video-on-demand and time-shift TV services that use its TV channels for delivery and so do not eat into your web bandwidth – unlike similar ADSL services.
Considering the high speed of my Telewest service and the imminent arrival of new features, it’s good value for money. One downside to the service though is the poor upload speed, which at 128Kbits/s, is half what you would the usually expect from an ISP.

Our verdict
Overall: A good service, with no monthly cap that offers good value for money.
