Intel's new mobile processor makes a debut.
After months of waiting we've finally managed to get our hands on Intel's new Pentium M, the Dothan, courtesy of AJP and its M6000N notebook. Dothan processors use a 90nm fabrication process and have a massive 2MB Level 2 cache.
Dothan also marks a debut for Intel's new naming convention where processors will be referred to by model number, not the processor speed (see also News page 21). For the M6000N we were given a 745 processor, which runs at 1.8GHz and has a 400MHz front side bus (FSB).
AJP has backed this up with 512MB of DDR Ram and, for a notebook, a large 80GB hard disk. This powered the notebook to a fast PCmark04 score of 3,552. With a 64MB mobile ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card installed, the M6000N can equally turn its hand to a bit of 3D gaming, albeit at lower resolutions and detail settings.
Both work and games look great on the 15.4in widescreen TFT running at a resolution of 1,440 x 900. Of course, the widescreen makes the notebook a little larger than average, although, at 2.5kg, it's light enough to carry around.
A DVD drive, 802.11g wireless and four-in-one card reader finish of the package.
Slightly disappointing was the lack of software. All you get is Windows XP Home, Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator and Wind DVD4.
We can't complain about the price, which, when you consider what's inside, is rather good.
