Telephony giant branches out into the navigation market
Binatone has recently branched out into the GPS market with its Carrera X350, a rather basic, yet portable, navigation aide.
The sat nav aims at the entry level market, so we were not expecting many additional features, although we were a little surprised not to see Bluetooth pairing, considering the manufacturer's history in the telephone market.
A sturdy and manoeuvrable windscreen mount is supplied in the box along with the token cigarette lighter charger. On the unit itself you'll find a power switch, headphone jack port and TMC connection, and a spare SD card slot for loading additional maps.
The X350 starts up pretty quickly, offering you the option to view current GPS settings or adjust the general control settings. You'll also find a document and picture viewer, but the bulk of the functionality is obviously found under the navigation menu.
Here you can choose to navigate by address, seven-digit postcode, favourites, recent locations or POIs (Points of Interest), and can also create a multi-point route by building a 'trip' using multiple destinations. When you get into navigation itself, you'll find a Mio-style cockpit screen with a map view and trip computer showing typical speed/time/ETA details.
The maps and spoken directions are very clear, with just about the right sensitivity for recalculations if you take a wrong turn. Position on the road, along with trip information, is very accurate, with reassuring confirmation of your current location and next waypoint en route.
There's also an Alternative Route function that enables you to skip a specific distance on the pre-planned route before rejoining, handy for avoiding unexpected traffic jams. Binatone even includes a free UK safety camera database, with free updates for the first six months.
The X350's navigation features are basic but very capable, making it a good budget sat nav.
Pros: Easy to use; accurate and clear directions; accessible
controls
Cons: Not a lot extra past basic navigation
Overall: A solid, no-nonsense navigator that gets the basics
just right

Coverage of the UK: Full or partial?
I was on the verge of buying a TomTom One, until I tried to find the camsite I was heading for in Guernsey. A lot of GPS units use mapping from TeleAtlas. According to TeleAtlas, the Channel Islands, not the Isle of Man exist! You know, those parts of the UK where quite a few people live and a lot more people go for holiday I eventually settled for a Garmin. And jolly good it is too!

Nice bit of kit
Decent entry-level SatNav. Added bonus is that it is easy to install TomTom6 onto the X350 if the included navigation software is not to your liking.

Yes, in a way.
You can plug it into the USB-port of your computer and let it charge while you have your home computer on.

X350 is great
It's a really good unit. Have owned Sony, Garmin and all the main brands, but none (that I've owned) have been as quick, accurate, easy to use, slim and compact, and generally as good as this Binatone model. Dont spend wasted cash on branded models, when for half the price you could get this Binatone. It's really good. I use it for work driving to mutli locations (the most being 26 locations one after the other) and it's a realy star.

binatone c350
I have as a first Sat nav a Binatone c350, it works ok to a point, like if you stray off the Sat nav planned route it always seems to want to take you back to whwre you may have strayed off the route which may be miles back, I would have of expected it to replan the route to pick up where you at in ref, to where you wish to get to.
