Kodak Easyshare DX6490

With a 10x optical zoom lens and a 4megapixel CCD, the DX6490 is latest edition to Kodak's seemingly endless Easyshare range. Thanks mainly to the 10x optical zoom, the familiar shape of the other Easyshare cameras is thrown out of the window in favour of a more 'prosumer'-looking model.

Kodak has a reputation for producing easy-to-use digital cameras, and the Easyshare DX6490 is no exception. The bright 2.2in LCD sits proudly on the back of the camera while a large mode dial offers quick access to the various shooting options. For some reason, Kodak has recessed the zoom switch into a protective shell. Although this eliminates accidental zooming, which is not exactly a common occurrence on most digicams, it does make it a bit fiddly to use.

As with all Easyshare cameras, the DX6490 can be hooked up to a Kodak camera or printer dock, though you have to purchase these separately.

In the past, Kodak digicams have been guilty of over-exaggerating colours and, despite looking vibrant at first sight, their photos lacked in subtle detail. In our tests, the DX6490 did extremely well. In the skin tone and texture shot it was second only to the Nikon Coolpix 5400. Some may even say they prefer the Kodak's attempt at this scene, however we feel the Nikon has far better detail and colour reproduction - you can judge for yourself by taking a look at the shots on CD2.

The DX6490 automatically adjusts images more than others here. However, a comfortable design and a host of features, makes this camera a great choice for someone who wants to take decent photos with the absolute minimum of fuss. What's more, the asking price is respectable for a 4megapixel camera with a whopping 10x optical zoom and puts other more expensive and less able cameras to shame.
