Vodafone Mobile Connect

Until recently, 3G has only been marketed as a way to have video conversations when mobile. The incentive hasn't really worked, so Vodafone has decided to enter the 3G market with a data product.

Similar in looks to a regular GPRS data card, the new Mobile Connect can connect a notebook to the Internet at up to 384Kbits/sec. This, of course, depends on the strength of the 3G signal in your area, although the card will switch to GPRS mode when needed.

If you're having trouble getting a signal, Vodafone provides an external aerial. However, it's quite chunky and better suited for areas where you've got room to sit down.

When we tested the card in central London we had no problems with the connection. Speeds were better than a modem and slightly better than the GPRS cards we've tested.

It's very easy to use thanks to Vodafone's Mobile Connect software. It automatically configures your card to connect and getting online is really simple. The software also has quick launch buttons for web and email, as well as managing text messages.

However, the cost could be restrictive. The minimum charge per month is £11.75, which includes 5MB of data. Each additional megabyte, though, is £2.35. There's a range of different plans on the Vodafone website, which you should check.

With all price plans, we'd still suggest surfing with web graphics turned off to save money. An alternative plan would be to use Onspeed (reviewed last issue), which compresses Internet traffic.

We were pleased with the card, although pricing schemes mean it is likely to be a product restricted to business users.
