Multivision Visage LT

Good price and good performance, with great connectivity.

Multivision only recently made its entrance into the notebook market but has already brought out a sub-£1,000 model, for those on a budget, in the form of the Visage LT.

It's built around a Pentium 4 Mobile processor running at 1.7GHz, and has 256MB of DDR-Ram memory.

The 30GB hard disk provides decent storage capacity for a notebook at this price, while the Nvidia Geforce 2 Go 200 graphics card, with 32MB of dedicated memory, helped it to achieve a score of 2,536 in 3Dmark 2001.

The Vision LT also managed a respectable 160 in Sysmark 2002 and ran for a full hour and 47 minutes on battery power.

This model feels more robust than Multivision's debut, the Vision, with a solid keyboard and large, well-spaced keys laid out in their usual places.

Volume and screen controls double up on the function buttons and hot keys provide direct access to email and internet applications.

At the front of the unit two speakers are mounted on either side of an infrared sensor.

The left-hand side of the unit houses a PC card Type II slot and a USB port, while a DVD-Rom drive sits on the right-hand side next to a lockable spring-loaded power switch. Sadly though, the floppy drive is external.

Turn the unit around and you'll discover a mini-Firewire port, along with local area network and RJ-11 sockets and another USB port.

There is also a parallel port and a VGA socket so you can connect up a monitor if you tire of the 14in LCD screen, which has a native resolution of 1,024 x 768 and a decent viewing angle.

A port replicator socket further increases your options.
