Philips Brilliance 230W5

A huge display at an impressive price

If those tiny 19in TFT screens don't give you enough creative freedom, the latest entry in Philips' Brilliance range of monitors is definitely worth a look. With a whopping 23in widescreen display, the 230W5 will instantly appeal to graphic designers, multimedia fans and those working on large spreadsheets.

The 230W5's maximum resolution of 1,900 x 1,200 makes a huge difference when compared to 19in monitors with a 1,280 x 1,024 display. Indeed, use it for simple tasks such as word processing and you feel overwhelmed with the amount of space you have to work in.

The rest of the 230W5's specification is equally good reading. A 500:1 contrast ratio delivers bright images, while the response time of 16ms means moving images stay crisp. Screens of this size will no doubt be used for display purposes, and with horizontal and vertical viewing angles of 176 deg the 230W5 delivers a clear picture from almost any angle.

Both digital and analogue inputs are provided. Other features include a picture-in-picture mode, a USB2 hub and a front-access memory card reader hidden behind a flip-open door. The card reader accepts all major formats, except XD Picture Cards.

In terms of design, the 230W5 also comes up trumps. The tilting screen and sturdy swivel base allow you to effortlessly adjust the angle of the display. There's also a set of integrated stereo speakers should you want you want hassle-free audio.

While we have no doubts over the quality of the 230W5, TFT screens of this size have quite a niche market and the average home user usually doesn't require anything greater than a 19in screen. Nevertheless, if you're after an oversized screen this new Philips model won't disappoint.
