NEC Multisync LCD 1960NX

Good image quality, but this is expensive.

Now that prices of TFT screens are finally reaching sensible levels, many of you may be considering a monitor upgrade. Even a 15in LCD can give you a visual boost, while larger 17in and 19in models bring both virtual and physical desktop breathing space.

Classed as entry-level with a business-like appearance, the Multisync 1960NX is NEC's latest 19in offering. It features analogue and digital inputs, a 600:1 contrast ratio and is optimised for a resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 at 60Hz. The screen can be tilted to suit your viewing preference, and a disc beneath the monitor's stand allows it to be rotated easily.

Unfortunately, the design is not without its faults. Not only are the buttons for the on-screen manager tiny and virtually unreadable, but their operation isn't exactly logical. When the setup sheet tells you to start the OSM (on-screen menu) by selecting Exit, you know someone hasn't thought the design through. Once you're into the menus, the small keys make navigation fiddly.

The picture quality on our test unit was also disappointing. Although brightness and contrast were good, the image on the analogue input was blurred on some PCs. That said, on others it was fine and the DVI input produced good results every time. Moving pictures also remained sharp thanks to a response time of 25 milliseconds. Although capable of great images, the monitor is clearly choosy about which PCs it is matched with.

We also have to quibble over the price. At £680, the 1960NX isn't the cheapest 19in screen we've seen and you really are paying a premium for that extra inch. You can buy decent 18in units for less than £400 and the 1960NX doesn't even offer extras, such as integrated stereo speakers.
