Review: Serif Webplus X2 web design software

Website-creation suite with a strong focus on design

Web design falls into one of two camps.

The first type designs the entire site, including content and design, in one place, the other designs a select few templates and relies on content management software to put articles in place.

Webplus falls firmly in the former camp, but this does not mean that it passes up on the latest design possibilities.

We were pleased to find that layout uses CSS, not tables. This helps keep the layout of the pages as simple as possible, making them more accessible to mobile browsers and visible to search engines.

The formatting information set with CSS is embedded in each page, which is a slight disappointment as using an external style sheet helps keep file sizes down.

Several master pages can be created as templates, helping to keep a consistent look across a site. The site manager tool is also useful for planning, and navigation bars can be created automatically.

The design heritage is clear from the ability to link text boxes together to flow copy from one to the other.

There is even an automatic flow tool for creating as many boxes as are required on following pages. There are also plenty of attractive text tools with effects, including flowing text along lines.

There is a blog tool, but it can only be updated from within Webplus and is rather inflexible in design, as is the RSS viewer.

You can also insert HTML code fragments, which will come in handy when using tools that require small snippets of HTML, such as Google Analytics.

Ecommerce is supported for accounts with Paypal, Romancart and Mals, and HTML forms can be inserted for reader feedback.

Webplus would suit sites with relatively static content, but if you frequently update or have several contributors, there are better options.

I love this product

It is really easy to use, great value for money. It doesn't matter about editing if you haven't got the program, you should buy it instead those who haven't got it. It's got everything you could possibly want do. I think it is a lot better than Front Page - I have done both and passed exams with front page. Serif makes it so easy and simple to use, it's a lot easier to understand also.

Hate It

I'm using at school (even though I've got my own website and very advanced! How boring!), and so far its poo. Alright Ill say it is kind of easy to use but thats the only good thing about it! Even from the second I double clicked on the icon I knew it would be aload of rubbish, due to the fact it took a couple of minutes to load (and not just on a restricted account either)! Then it started up into something that looked like Microsoft Office Publisher (And to be honest you'd be better with publisher, because the only difference is a intergrated ftp client: which is very flakey). So I went to resize the web page and the whole page disapeared and we couldn't get it back without restarted the program! After restarting the program I didn't try to change anything (1 problem), so I started with the main design. About 2 minutes later it crashed on me, so i started again and the same thing happened again and kept happening(I know your supposed to save it every once in a while, but come on, that was just rediculos!) If your looking for a propper web package please don't choose this one (unless your a right dim wit, in which case how & why have you got a website, No offence)It is over priced, flakey and slow. I use WYSIWYG Web Builder which was £20/£30 for a 3 user liscence but any pagkage is better than that!

Web plus X2 support sucks

Don't lose your proof of purchase or they will never support it after it crashes & burns. They expect you to keep all the records and proof you bought it from them. My site is down because they won't support it until I provide proof of purchase which I am sure they already have. I have been trading Email with them trying to get a fix because it won't install. They come back with you didn't buy it from us so proof of purchase is required. I did buy it from them and if they can't keep their records in tact then I would look elsewhere for a product because this on for lack of support and them forcing you to jump through hoops to get support is not worth the aggravation
