A good-value screen with a great picture
The VG712s is the flagship 17in panel in Viewsonic's corporate and advanced graphics range. It certainly looks the part, thanks to a slim bezel and chrome-effect buttons. However, it isn't as flexible as some screens as there's no pivot option for landscape views or height adjustment.
The monitor has both digital and analogue input connectors, although only the analogue cable is included in the box. The quality of the picture using this is fine, but users with compatible graphics cards should buy a DVI cable to get the best images.
One of the VG712's most vaunted features is its 12ms response time. We tested it using a range of high-definition videos and were impressed. Gaming performance was also very good, with no visible 'ghosting' effects, although this is difficult to spot even on displays with a slower response time.
The screen has a quoted brightness of 300cd/m2, and a 500:1 contrast ratio. It was therefore unsurprising to see that black levels were good, but light tones had a tendency to be slightly harsh.
The display's horizontal viewing angle is excellent, but we were disappointed to see that visibility deteriorated along the vertical axis, accentuating the harshness of bright tones. Unless your eyes are fairly level with the centre of the screen, this can cause you to misinterpret different shades, which is not ideal in a professional environment.
On the whole, the VG712S is a good monitor that provides good value for money, particularly for home users. It isn't as flexible as some screens but if you're after a low-cost, big-brand TFT, it's a good choice.
