Review: Belkin Tunecommand AV for iPod

In principle, Belkin's Tunecommand AV for iPod doesn't sound like much - a way to connect your iPod to a stereo, essentially - but in practice it's much more impressive.

The base unit includes a number of adaptors so iPods of various incarnations can be neatly slotted into it. And, once plugged into the mains, it will also charge the player.

The supplied AV cable makes it possible to connect the Tunecommand to a stereo for music playback, or even a television to watch videos or photo slideshows from a suitable iPod. The remote control can then be used to select files.

Although the remote provides only basic playback control, shuffle/repeat options and volume adjustment, the fact that it works using radio frequencies rather than traditional infrared brings two key benefits. Not only does it not need to be pointed directly at the base unit in order to function, but it also works at a range of up to 120ft - useful if you want to change the music from the garden, for example.

There are a few minor quibbles though, including the need for playlists to be manually selected on the iPod itself. You're also limited to just back, forward, play and pause controls during playback, while operating from a distance means that the screen of the attached iPod is barely visible, so this is hardly cause for concern.

Both the Tunecommand base unit and remote control have been styled to match the familiar look of the iPod and it will makes an attractive addition to any home entertainment system. The price of £65 is initially off-putting, but by shopping around it is possible to knock £20 of the price, which represents much better value for money.

Overall, the Tunecommand AV for iPod from Belkin is a simple and effective device.
