Review: Acer H5350 DLP projector

The H5350 DLP projector from Acer offers 720p HD images in a fairly small, neat package.

Projector prices have tumbled recently, with the H5350 offering quality that would have cost twice as much around 18 months ago.

The H5350 accepts VGA, component, composite, S-video and HDMI, so there are plenty of connections to choose from.

It’s fine running through the composite or S-video connections from a DVD player or a cable box, but it really came into its own when we plugged our test Xbox 360 into the HDMI connector.

Annoyingly, the projector doesn’t take sound from the HDMI cable, but that’s not too much of an issue given that external speakers are a far better bet than the H5350’s small internal one.

Colours are vivid, but not overbearing, and the projection is fairly bright, although not quite enough to be used in bright daylight. The settings required a bit of tweaking using the supplied remote control before the colour balance looked right.

With the curtains drawn, however, the image was excellent. The control unit on top of the device can be removed to turn it into a remote control, and the menu system is easy to follow with clear text and icons.

It has vertical keystone control, but that’s the only screen shape adjustment – it lacks the detailed adjustment possible with more expensive devices.

Like all projectors, the H5350 becomes hot when in use, but a fan expels air from the front of the unit; if you’re using it in a living room, it would be wise to sit away from the grille. The fan is audible, but you’re unlikely to hear it when watching a film.

The lightweight design and carry case, which is included, make the H5350 easily portable.

This all-rounder is a fine projector for PC use, games and movies, and is impressive value for money. The only caveat is that, as it’s a DLP device, some viewers might see colour-wheel flashes, which doesn’t occur with LCD projectors.
