Brother DCP-310CN

Value printing, scanning and copying

If you're limited for space on your desk, opting for an all-in-one printer, scanner and photocopier is usually the best option. The DCP-310CN is Brother's latest and includes an Ethernet port, allowing it to be easily shared across a network.

The compact design looks impressive but, when you pull out the paper tray and open the scanner lid, the case feels a little flimsy.

On the top is an array of buttons providing quick access to functions including photocopying and scanning, while the front sports a memory card reader for direct printing from all major formats.

Lift the lid to the DCP-310CN and you're presented with four separate ink cartridges along with access to the USB and Ethernet ports.

As far as print quality goes, the DCP-310CN is very much middle of the road. Text output is acceptable, but we've seen better, while colour prints on glossy paper will certainly be good enough for the home user who isn't looking for top-end photos. Colours were reasonable, but our test prints were a little lacking in fine detail.

Similarly, print speeds were average. It took just over three minutes to output 10 pages of text, while our A4 colour test photo took four minutes. The printer does kick out a fair amount of noise though; nothing too disconcerting, but certainly louder than other inkjets we've reviewed.

Although print quality isn't the best we've seen, the DCP-310CN is a good compact all-in-one unit with the added benefit of being able to hook up to a network. Combine this with the relatively low price tag and it's an attractive option.
