Creative Webcam NX Pro

Finished in a stylish translucent black and silver casing, the Webcam NX Pro is the latest addition to Creative's popular range of webcams. Complementing its somewhat futuristic design, the NX Pro sports an adjustable tripod stand which allows it to sit on top of a monitor or clip securely to a notebook or TFT screen.

Despite its relatively low price, the NX Pro uses a Cmos image sensor to deliver video at 640 x 480 and interpolated stills at 1,024 x 768. Despite its obvious shortcomings compared with modern digital cameras, this level of performance is adequate for the NX Pro's intended range of uses.

Setup was very intuitive, with wizards guiding us through every step of the installation process. Once set up, the NX Pro is compatible with a variety of videoconferencing and messaging applications, including the supplied Microsoft Netmeeting. Thanks to the supplied clip-on microphone, users may enjoy live videoconferencing with relative ease.

Creative has also included useful applications such as the versatile PC Cam Center, which allows users to take pictures, record videos and arrange them logically in personal albums. An interesting addition to the Webcam NX Pro package is the ability to use the camera as a security device. Making use of its motion-sensing capabilities, the NX Pro can automatically send images via email, or update pictures on a web page whenever movement is detected near your PC. The software can even play a wav file to warn the intruder that they are under surveillance.

Creative also sells the Webcam NX, which is a cheaper, lower-quality version. But those who are attracted by a microphone, as well as superior image quality, are advised to consider the NX Pro.
