HP Laserjet 1015

High-quality output for home and office.

The HP 1015 is a no-frills, entry-level monochrome laser printer aimed at the professional or small office user and, with an overall footprint of just 370 x 230mm, it won't eat up much desk space.

The design of the two-tone grey unit is basic, with just two buttons on the case: one to start a print job and one to cancel. There are also two LEDs to show when the printer is online and to flag up errors.

The paper tray is similarly low-rent and in an ungainly manner from the front of the printer. We can't knock its capacity, as 150 sheets should cope with most people's needs. The tray is covered by a transparent plastic cover that acts as a paper support for the manual feed slot.

The output tray is moulded into the top surface of the 1015 and holds a maximum of 125 sheets of paper. Output is kept in a tidy stack by the paper support, which folds forward.

Getting access to the inside of the printer requires flipping the whole top of the 1015 open on its hinge. As this is a mono laser, there's just the one toner cartridge to deal with. It's easy to get access to and replace, although its 2,000 page capacity should last for quite a while.

In our tests, this model lived up to HP's rated print speed of 14 pages per minute (ppm), churning out our test text, pdf and mixed content documents comfortably at speed.

Print output quality was good: areas of shading were evenly reproduced and characters were well defined with a crisp outline. The 1015 even managed to produce our test colour photo relatively well in black and white.
