Konica Revio KD-500Z

A 5megapixel camera that's compact, easy to use and has high image quality.

The metallic black Revio KD-500Z is tiny for a 5megapixel digital camera, and is light enough to carry around comfortably in your pocket.

The KD-500Z's predecessor, the 4megapixel KD-400Z, was the first digital camera to accept both Secure Digital (SD) memory cards and Memory Sticks, an attribute that the KD-500Z shares.

Konica has bundled a 16MB SD card with this model, as well as 2MB of internal memory.

The KD-500Z powers up as soon as you slide back the lens cover but, like many other cameras, you have to be careful when shutting down.

This involves pushing the lens cover to the edge and waiting until the lens retracts into the body of the camera before pushing the cover all the way across.

Crisp images are displayed on a clear 1.5in LCD display at the back of the unit, and there are four image resolutions.

The 3x optical/2x digital zoom is a little jerky but has an impressive macro mode range of 6-50cm.

A four-directional cursor button allows you to navigate on-screen menus, and the left and right functions give quick access to photographic modes/self timer and flash.

In our tests, the KD-500Z produced some excellent outdoor shots. Outlines were crisp, and colours and textures were faithfully rendered and convincing.

Indoors, pink and orange had a tinge of red, but the camera captured detail precisely and picked out differentiation between areas of similar tone.

It also handled transparent and shiny subjects aptly, reproducing both light and colour reflected from other objects, although some close-up shots were slightly blurry around the edges.
