Basic but functional, this will appeal to anyone who doesn't need bells and whistles.

While a top-of-the-range handheld computer packed full of the latest multimedia bells and whistles might look good, it's an expensive toy if you just want to organise your life. If you're only interested in the calendar and address book, then PalmOne's Zire 31 is a much better buy.

At £130, it's incredibly good value for money. The casing, although plastic, looks pretty good. The screen is colour but unfortunately, the quality isn't great. The low-resolution 160 x 160 display looks blocky and it can be hard to read.

The 16Mb of memory should prove sufficient for your day-to-day storage needs, although an SD memory card slot provides an easy way to upgrade this. This could come in handy if you fancy using the headphone socket to play MP3s. The software to do this is already installed. PalmOne provides USB and power cables in the box. The lack of a cradle may disappoint some but it makes the Zire 31 simple to transport and power on the move.

The Zire 31 is functional and basic but if that's all you want, you can't go wrong.
